Giants release CB James Bradberry after failing to find trade partner

The New York Giants released veteran cornerback James Bradberry on Monday after being unsuccessful in finding a trade partner for him, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported. The move will free up $10 million in cap space.

New York signed Bradberry as a free agent during the 2020 offseason after he had played four seasons for the Carolina Panthers. He was entering the last year of his contract.

The move had more to do with freeing up money and not a statement about Bradberry's character or performance. The 28-year-old was set to make $13.5 million in 2022 and would have counted as $21.9 million on the cap.

"Listen, he's a starting corner in the league," general manager Joe Schoen told WFAN Sports Radio in New York last week. "It's just where we are financially. [We've] still got to sign our draft picks, be able to sign our practice squad, and have replacement costs for during the season."

While Bradberry's exit frees up capital, it also leaves the Giants with a void at cornerback. He topped New York's depth chart last season when he made four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 47 tackles.
