Giants’ Saquon Barkley Reveals More Details On Potential Trade
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Giants have gotten off to a rough start this season, which has prompted speculation that the team could potentially trade running back Saquon Barkley before the Oct. 31 NFL deadline.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll met with Barkley ahead of New York’s Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders, and after the game on Sunday, Barkley said that he was told in the meeting that the club intends to keep him, per Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post.

Barkley then made a quip about his key fumble on Sunday afternoon.

“If we would’ve lost that game, they (the fan base) would’ve shipped my (expletive) out of here,” said the star halfback.

Barkley carried the ball 21 times for 77 yards while catching three passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in the victory, which snapped a four-game losing streak for Big Blue.

The 26-year-old has only played in four out of seven games this year due to an ankle injury that sidelined him between Weeks 3 and 5. During the time he has been on the field, Barkley’s effectiveness has been limited, as he has rushed for 284 yards and a touchdown while averaging a meager 3.8 yards per carry. He has also tallied 16 receptions for 87 yards and a score.

Barkley, who played his collegiate football at Penn State, was selected by the Giants with the second overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He has made a pair of Pro Bowl appearances in the Big Apple, with his most recent trip coming last season when he racked up 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns, logging 4.4 yards per tote. In addition, he snared 57 balls for 338 yards.

New York was unable to reach a long-term agreement with Saquon Barkley prior to the 2023 campaign, meaning that he will hit free agency in the spring.

The Giants are 2-5 and will take on the New York Jets next weekend.
