Numerous stories have linked the New York Giants with former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh ever since the Ravens surprisingly parted ways with Harbaugh last week.
For an article published on Monday, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY touched upon Harbaugh's alleged interest in the Giants' job. Hughes also indicated that Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch may prove to be their own worst enemies regarding the club's pursuit of Harbaugh.
"He values the opening, sources said, because of the franchise’s history and quarterback Jaxson Dart, but New York is not the only team pursuing him," Hughes wrote about Harbaugh. "Other openings could offer Harbaugh influence over the choice of general manager — something the Giants are not currently willing to entertain, as they do not plan to move on from Joe Schoen at this time."
Hughes' update will likely annoy Giants fans who already wanted the club to move on from Schoen after Big Blue went 13-38 from Week 1 of the 2023 season through Week 18 of the 2025 campaign. Despite such pleas, there has been no sign that the Giants will show Schoen the door this winter. Then again, the "do not plan to move on from" portion of Hughes' report leaves the door at least slightly open for Giants ownership to change their minds about Schoen's status.
Meanwhile, a previous report shared that Harbaugh may want "total authority over the roster" and the ability to choose his own GM with his next team.
"The Atlanta Falcons are a team to monitor, sources said," Hughes added about Harbaugh's future. "There is belief amongst other coaching candidates that it’s the Giants and Falcons for Harbaugh, with the loser of those sweepstakes landing (former Cleveland Browns head coach) Kevin Stefanski. The Miami Dolphins have Harbaugh interest, too, although they already made their general manager decision (Jon-Eric Sullivan). There could be additional vacancies opening after wild-card weekend."
The Falcons fired former head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot shortly after their 2025 season wrapped up. This past Saturday, Atlanta announced the hiring of franchise icon Matt Ryan as the club's new president of football.
For what it's worth, it seemed as of Monday afternoon that neither the Philadelphia Eagles nor the Green Bay Packers will actively pursue Harbaugh. On Sunday night, longtime New York sports reporter Gary Myers mentioned that the Giants "are positioned to immediately offer John Harbaugh their head coaching position at their expected meeting this week because they have fulfilled the Rooney Rule requirements with two in-person interviews with minority candidates last week."
