Giants Sign Backup Slot Receiver
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The biggest headliner of the New York Giants’ offseason will come on April 24, when the team makes a top-three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Almost the entirety of the early offseason has instead been focused on depth.

General manager Joe Schoen revamped the secondary with safety Jevon Holland and corner Paulson Adebo, but essentially every other exterior free agent has addressed the middle and bottom of the roster.

Tackles James Hudson III and Stone Forsythe will help insulate the passing offense. Two new defensive tackles, edge rushers, and linebackers will join them on the 90-man roster.

On Saturday, Schoen added to this trend. The Giants signed former Philadelphia Eagles receiver Zach Pascal to a one-year deal (pending a physical).

Pascal visited New York on Monday, but his chances were seemingly dashed later in the week when the team added to the receiver room. The Giants also signed receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to a one-year deal, adding a big body to presumably soak up some snaps in the slot.

Pascal also makes his living inside. However, he hasn’t seen much time at all on offense in recent years. He did not catch a pass for the 2024 Arizona Cardinals, and in 2023, he caught four passes for 19 yards.

That leaves the bulk of his contributions to come on special teams, where he played at least 200 snaps in each of the past three seasons. His versatility could be what earns him a roster spot, especially as the depth chart grows crowded.

Given his lack of production in recent seasons, Pascal slides in – at best – as the fifth receiver on the depth chart. With Jalin Hyatt, Bryce-Ford Wheaton, Montrell Washington, and Ihmir Smith-Marsette joining him as depth (along with a possible rookie), his road to playing in Week 1 isn’t without obstacles.

Once again, Schoen has made an addition with one eye on special teams and another on reinforcement for one side of the ball. This is an intentional shift from a front office that saw its depth crumble in 2024, and with everyone’s jobs on the line, elevating the Giants’ floor is a must.
