Giants Sign G Jon Runyan To 2-Year Extension

The deal includes $21.5MM in guaranteed money, though that likely includes the $9MM in salary Runyan was due this year, resulting in just $12.5MM in new guarantees. The extension should also create enough cap space for the Giants to get under the 2026 limit by the start of the regular season.

Runyan, 29, arrived in New York on a three-year, $30MM deal in 2024 to take over at left guard after a four-year stint to start his career in Green Bay. As a sixth-round pick for the Packers out of Michigan, Runyan secured a full-time starting gig in his sophomore campaign. In his three-year stint as a starter, Pro Football Focus (subscription required) graded him just below average. In signing with the Giants, Runyan became one in a series of interior offensive linemen the Packers let walk in free agency over a three-year span.

Once in New York, Runyan’s first season didn’t get off to a hot start. He allowed a career-high 29 pressures across the first 13 games of the year, per PFF, before sustaining a season-ending ankle injury. This was Runyan’s first experience missing time due to injury in the NFL after he appeared in all possible 67 games with the Packers. The 6-foot-4, 307-pound lineman improved somewhat in 2025, surrendering 31 pressures across 16 games, and appears set to keep his starting job to open the season under the new John Harbaugh regime.

There’s a chance this new agreement for Runyan is the result of the head coach change. At times last year, he was seen as a cut candidate, and once Harbaugh was in the building, his starting job suddenly seemed a bit more secure. Coming into training camp, rumors once again indicated that Runyan was not a lock to make the initial 53-man roster in 2026, but once camp started, those rumors subsided as he took every snap opposite rookie first-round guard Francisco Mauigoa on the first-team offense.

With today’s deal, the Giants have secured the bulk of the offensive line that will be blocking for second-year backfield mates Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo moving forward. Runyan and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor are both under contract through the 2028 season, and as long as New York exercises Mauigoa’s fifth-year option, he and left tackle Andrew Thomas will be under contract through the 2029 season, though Thomas may be secured even longer with recent rumors of a raise in the not too distant future. The team will only need to figure out the future at the center position as three-year starter John Michael Schmitz enters a contract year.
