 Giants Sign Starting Corner

The New York Giants entered the offseason with critical needs at quarterback, defensive tackle, cornerback, and offensive line. On Monday, general manager Joe Schoen made a move to address those liabilities.

The Giants signed cornerback Paulson Adebo during the legal tampering period, according to Ian Rapoport.

Adebo’s deal is reportedly worth $30 million over three years, with $20 million guaranteed and $12.5 million in 2025.

His contract will not become official until Wednesday at 4 p.m. (Eastern) when the new league year begins and free agency officially opens.

Adebo immediately figures to start opposite Deonte Banks and will likely be the team’s top corner entering 2025.

His 2024, however, didn’t go as planned. Adebo played in just seven games before breaking his femur, cutting his contract year short. That isn’t necessarily a durability red flag – Adebo played in 44 of 51 possible games in his three prior seasons.

It’s likely far too early for the New York faithful to tell, but Adebo’s athleticism is central to his game. Retaining as much of it as possible after his gnarly leg injury will be critical to success, although one must operate with the assumption that the Giants have given a green light to his medicals.

Adebo, a 2021 third-round pick, boasts good size (6-1, 198 pounds). He ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash during his pre-draft circuit and posted elite agility numbers, too. He’s a strong processor who closes well and combines physicality with fluidity to make plays on the ball.

Subsequently, he’s at his best in zone coverage, which makes him a good fit in defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s system. He won’t have to move nickel corner Dru Phillips out of the slot, either.

Adebo has a knack for creating turnovers, logging three in his shortened 2024 campaign and seven in the three seasons prior, with two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to boost.

At least 24 corners will have a contract worth more than Adebo’s $30 million as free agency begins, with 21 seeing more on an annual basis. This is partly a leap of faith from Schoen, banking on a continued breakout. But on paper, Adebo’s contract looks like a potential steal for New York.
