Giants star Brian Burns disrespected in new edge rusher rankings from NFL personnel who didn't take a clear element into account

The New York Giants made a big move during the offseason ahead of the 2024 season by trading significant draft capital to the Carolina Panthers for star pass rusher Brian Burns.

During his first year with New York, Burns recorded 8.5 sacks, 18 QB hits, and two forced fumbles. But it wasn't enough to land himself in ESPN's top ten edge rusher ranking using a poll of NFL execs, coaches, and scouts.

Brian Burns falls out of the top 10 in ESPN's edge rusher rankings from NFL execs, coaches, and scouts

"He's still got premier ability, someone you have to account for on every snap. If this was a skill-set conversation only, he'd be top five. He's got everything you want from that standpoint. But he just hasn't had the consistent production." -- NFL personnel evaluator

While Burns didn't land a spot in the top ten, he was named an honorable mention. An NFL personnel evaluator shared that Burns' skill alone would have him ranked amongst the best pass rushers in the league, but it's his consistency that hasn't been where it needs to be. Burns has recorded 10 or more sacks only once in his career, in 2022. This upcoming season with the Giants could end up being the best situation Burns has been in since being drafted in 2019.

He is playing alongside one of, if not the best, interior defensive linemen in the NFL, in Dexter Lawrence. And this season will also be joined by the third pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, Abdul Carter. If Carter can hit the ground running at the NFL level, Burns will likely see the lowest amount of offensive attention he's seen in his career to date, which should help him pass the 10-sack milestone for the second time in his career. The Giants have one of the most dangerous defensive lines in the league on paper, and Burns has all the talent needed to be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. We will just have to wait and see if he lives up to that potential this season.
