The New York Giants pulled off a stunning upset, defeating the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers 21-18 at home. In his first career NFL start, rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart impressed, passing for 111 yards and a touchdown while rushing 10 times for 54 yards and another score. Running back Cam Skattebo also contributed 79 rushing yards and 11 receiving yards.
Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?
New York didn’t stop at the win. The Giants’ social media team celebrated with a playful jab, posting a broken phone charger and captioning it: “low power mode.” Another graphic mocked analysts who had predicted a Chargers victory, featuring Dart and Skattebo in a “Stepbrothers” parody with the caption, “Did we just become best friends?” Analysts included Maurice Jones-Drew, Eric Edholm, Bucky Brooks, and Adam Rank, none of whom forecasted New York scoring more than 18 points.
The Giants faced adversity as well. Dart briefly left the game for a concussion assessment, and star wideout Malik Nabers suffered a torn ACL. Despite these setbacks, Dart connected with tight end Theo Johnson for a touchdown, and New York dominated time of possession, holding the ball nearly 10 more minutes than Los Angeles (35:28 to 24:32).
The loss was a tough pill for head coach Jim Harbaugh. With offensive line injuries sidelining Joe Alt, Rashawn Slater, and Mekhi Becton, quarterback Justin Herbert threw 41 passes but managed only 203 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Harbaugh lamented penalties, hits on Herbert, and not running the ball enough with rookie first-round pick Omarion Hampton, who rushed 12 times for 128 yards and a score. “In hindsight, lose a game, you always think what you could’ve done different,” Harbaugh said.
The Chargers’ pass-heavy approach under difficult circumstances backfired, highlighting the team’s need for better in-game adjustments. Still, Hampton’s breakout performance provides a potential silver lining for Los Angeles moving forward.
For the Giants, the victory serves as a confidence boost, despite ranking among the league’s weakest offenses. Week 5 offers a more manageable matchup against the New Orleans Saints, followed by road tests against the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos. Dart’s early success suggests the rookie-led team could continue surprising opponents.
