Giants to meet with former No. 1 overall pick as Aaron Rodgers wait continues

The NFL free-agent quarterback carousel appears to be at a standstill.

At least two teams, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, are reportedly in a holding pattern while four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers mulls his future.

Reports have emerged that the 41-year-old is courting the Minnesota Vikings, seemingly attempting to manifest his own Brett Favre story arc. He's also been said to be considering retirement altogether.

In the meantime, however, Giants general manager Joe Schoen hasn't been sitting on his hands waiting for Rodgers' decision.

In recent days, he's met with two veteran signal-callers who appear to be his backup plans: Russell Wilson and Joe Flacco. Now, you can add Jameis Winston to that list.

The former No. 1 overall pick in 2015 is scheduled to meet with Giants brass on Tuesday, per NFL Media's Tom Pelissero.

He threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in a dozen appearances for the Cleveland Browns last season.

Winston's turnover issues are the biggest red flag when considering his serviceability, but it should be noted Cleveland's wide receiver corps saw career-high production with him under center.

Jerry Jeudy (1,229 yards, four TDs) was the biggest beneficiary of Winston's ball-delivery skills in 2024.

The potential ceiling for Winston with weapons like Malik Nabers, Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton at his disposal is likely higher than most realize.

That being said, the potential floor is always a concern. Twelve picks indicate his offensive deficiencies still exist, and he shouldn't be counted on to send New York back to the playoffs. But he'll likely be a lot cheaper than Rodgers.

Winston can be best viewed as a bridge QB to whichever future rookie signal-caller the team views as its best chance at winning more games.
