On the open market since May, quarterback Jake Haener has found his next opportunity. A deal with the Giants is in place, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Haener lined up visits with other teams recently, but he will head to New York deep into training camp. The Giants’ QB depth chart is still topped by Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston heading into 2026. Third-stringer Brandon Allen has struggled this summer, however, as detailed by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. That continued in New York’s preseason opener.
Allen is still in the fold, at least for now. Garafolo notes Haener will take the roster spot recently vacated by Sam Webb‘s retirement. The final weeks of camp and the preseason will thus include a competition for the No. 3 quarterback gig.
Haener entered the league in 2023 as a Saints draftee. The former fourth-rounder’s only action in the regular season to date came in 2024. Haener was cut by New Orleans in January but managed to quickly land a deal with the Chiefs. His time in Kansas City proved to be short-lived, though. Workouts with the Ravens and Texans failed to produce an agreement. Allen’s uncertain future could nevertheless help pave the way for a third-string role on Haener’s third NFL team.
A full slate of games will be the top priority in Dart’s case after his rookie season included a number of hits to the head. His 2026 preseason debut included the latest of several in-game trips to the medical tent. Winston, meanwhile, is in line for a second Giants season; his contract will expire after the coming campaign. The QB3 spot has been uncertain since it was clear Russell Wilson would not be re-signed, and that remains the case with Allen far from a roster lock.
Haener, 27, will look to earn playing time during the Giants’ second and third preseason contests. It will be interesting to see how he and Allen fare over the coming weeks with only one (at most) likely to remain on the roster by Week 1.
