Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams have been at the center of contention in the NFC since the team acquired him from the Detroit Lions in 2021. Evidenced in some early offseason moves though, the Rams are focused on reshaping some pieces on the roster.
Los Angeles is looking to trade wide receiver Cooper Kupp, a shocking development given the fact Kupp has become one of the most complete players at his position.
Some have not taken kindly to that massive change, including Matthew Stafford, or more specifically his wife Kelly. She voiced her feelings on a recent episode of "The Morning After" podcast on Feb. 6.
“My husband, like, wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation...
“I will say, the trading away of Cooper? … I’m confused, because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship. I have to be the dog in this situation — I want the respect for him that he deserves," she said.
For a veteran like Stafford his days of competing in the league are numbered. A trade of Kupp represents a change in direction, something that could be a threat to his future despite the impressive season the Rams just had.
Regardless of how Stafford feels on the matter, the Rams have not taken kindly to his wife's flagrant public criticisms.
“The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publicly,” Colin Cowherd said last week. “They’re not real happy with Cooper Kupp going public with something they tried to keep quiet … They’re kinda over Cooper Kupp, and with that, a little bit Matt Stafford. They like him, but they don’t want to restructure his deal and give him a new contract.”
Besides the rather ugly "he said, she said" game here, everything coming from the Rams side does not make Stafford's final years in Los Angeles sound secure or guaranteed. Altogether, that has sparked recent trade rumors to teams like the New York Giants.
Assuming the Rams do not want to touch his deal, it could make sense for Los Angeles to shop him now. Such a move will not lead to a high first round pick, but there could be a good package to get from a team like New York for his services.
At 37, Stafford is no long-term option for anyone. But for the Giants, at the right price he is an ideal bridge to their next franchise quarterback the team finds in a future draft.
For now, there is not a concrete plan to move Stafford despite the frustrations concerning his wife or spilling out of the Kupp situation. Yet, this league can be quick to remind that things can change on a dime.
