This week’s Giants Vs. Chiefs Sunday Night Football matchup features two 0-2 teams playing in the swamps of New Jersey. The Giants’ home opener marks a surprising point in the season for the Chiefs, who haven’t started 0-2 since 2014. While many experts predicted a slow start for the G-Men, the Chiefs are in murky waters.
The Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs have been the gold standard in the NFL since 2018, with an appearance in the AFC Championship game every year, five trips to the Super Bowl, and three wins. Last season, KC went 15-2 with Mahomes going 15-1 as a starter. Though many of those victories came at the hand of controversial finishes, the team piledrived opponents until Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants have been unwatchable for years, leaving fans disappointed and disgusted with the team. Last week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, however, marked a possible turning point for the team. While they did lose the game, the franchise took the Cowboys to the limit through four quarters, plus a full period of overtime.
In the last three seasons during the regular season, the New York Football Giants have only scored more than 30 points three times before last week’s game. The offense, once stagnant under quarterback Daniel Jones, was firing on all cylinders, reminiscent of the days of Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr.
New York is facing quite possibly their toughest task of the season: keeping the Chiefs’ losing streak alive and well, while also winning the home opener. If this were last year, the point spread would probably have KC as 8.5 favorites instead of 6.5.
If last week proved anything, the Giants’ offense is good enough to hang around with another good offense. Mahomes, unlike Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, doesn’t have the weapons that Prescott has. Sure, Mahomes has future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce catching passes out of the tight end slot, but Kelce is on the back nine of his career.
Isiah Pacheco, the running back for the Chiefs, is from Vineland, NJ, and will surely want to make an impression in front of family and friends. Dexter Lawrence and the rest of the front seven must shut down Pacheco, as well as Kareem Hunt, to guarantee a win. The Chiefs’ running game is now the backbone of their offense until Rashee Rice returns from suspension.
One positive for the Giants going into Sunday is that Marcus Mbow, the rookie from Purdue, will get the start at Left Tackle. Mbow filled nicely in after James Hudson III was taken out of the game by Head Coach Brian Daboll after four penalties. The Giants will be relying on QB Russell Wilson’s moonball once again in the passing game. Cam Skattebo will surely bring an old-school smash-mouth style of not just running the ball, but also catching passes out of the backfield.
Will the Giants pull off the upset of the weekend? See you Sunday night for one of the more unexpected important games of the year!
