Giants' Brian Daboll Reveals Russell Wilson's Reaction to Being Benched

The New York Giants have played like one of the worst teams in the NFL to start the 2025 season. They sit with a 0-3 record, with an upcoming matchup against the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers.

Quarterback Russell Wilson hasn't been too impressive, completing 65-of-110 passes for 778 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and a 78.5 passer rating. However, his role with the Giants has always been as a place-holder for 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart.

On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that New York would be making the switch and would be having Dart start against a ferocious Chargers defense.

Brian Daboll Shares Russell Wilson's Reaction

On Wednesday, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed that this will be a season-long switch, while revealing Wilson didn't argue when informed of the move.

“I met both with Russ yesterday and Jaxson, privately, and Russ was nothing but a pro, which I expect him to be,” Daboll said.

Of course, as mentioned before, Wilson getting benched doesn't come as a major surprise. That's obvious by the fact that he only signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Giants and was never really considered a long-term option.

Despite Wilson knowing Dart was gunning for his job, he didn't shy away from prasing the rookie.

"I think Jaxson is a really good worker," Wilson said in July, according to Fox News. "He's a really good teammate. He's a guy who's had a really good college career."

Russell Wilson's NFL Career Going Forward

Now, the 14-year veteran is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season and considering he's already 36 years old, he may not have many suitors.

If teams are interested in Wilson, it would likely be in another similar role as a bridge quarterback or even as a backup.

His weak stat line, which may now be what he finishes with, certainly isn't going to look great to other NFL teams. If he does push for a starting role, then the 10-time Pro Bowler could be forced into retirement due to the lack of options.
