Green Bay Packers Again Linked To Veteran Quarterback
Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

When taking a look at the Green Bay Packers’ roster, there aren’t any glaring holes. General manager Brian Gutekunst did a good job of addressing some weaknesses in free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. That has some people thinking the Packers could take steps forward this season.

After shocking the football world and winning a playoff game last season, their first without Aaron Rodgers, optimism is high in Green Bay. Jordan Love looks to be their third straight hit on a quarterback and the team is loaded with young talent around him.

However, one of the concerns about how the team is currently constructed is the quarterback position. There may be some people who want to see more from Love than 18 starts, but he isn’t the major worry. Instead, it is the depth behind him.

Last season, 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford won the backup quarterback job. This year, he will compete with seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt to hold onto it. How confident would the team be if they had to turn to either player for more than just garbage time?

That is a big reason why Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report has suggested Green Bay as a landing spot for veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He remains available in free agency after his contract expired with the Tennessee Titans.

“The Packers, for instance, would be better off going to Tannehill in the event of a Jordan Love injury than hoping for the best with Sean Clifford (one career pass attempt) or rookie Michael Pratt,” Ballentine wrote.

Unless an injury occurs, Tannehill isn’t going to get a starting job in the NFL this offseason. If a team viewed him as such, he would have been on a roster by this point. With a record of 39-24 over the last five seasons, he presents a valuable backup option for teams.

Backup quarterback is a very important position. Last season, per Nick Shook, 66 quarterbacks started a game. In 2022, it was 68. The Green Bay Packers luckily didn’t have to start anyone but Love last season, but why not add some insurance in case?

Given the expectations of the team, it would be an unnecessary risk going into the season with only Clifford and Pratt as options behind Love. Adding Tannehill would make a lot of sense.
