The Green Bay Packers started their season with a bang, demolishing the hated Detroit Lions 27-13 on Sunday afternoon. For the first time in years, Green Bay came out of the gate hot, playing extremely well in all three phases of the game. It was a good sign for fans who have Super Bowl expectations for the team that calls their home Titletown, though the Packers have not won a championship since the 2010 NFL season.
And, of course, fans were excited to get their first look at their newest star, defensive end Micah Parsons, who was acquired from the Dallas Cowboys via trade less than two weeks before the season started. Despite a back injury and playing limited snaps, Parsons had three pressures, which resulted in a negative-yards passing play, an interception by safety Evan Williams, and the four-time Pro Bowler’s first sack with the Packers.
But fans watching the game may have noticed something very different about some of Green Bay’s players, particularly something seven of them were wearing on their jerseys.
The end of the 2022 NFL season marked many changes for the Packers. Not only did they decided to move on from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers in favor Jordan Love, but they also replaced many long-time veteran players with young rookies in the 2023 NFL Draft.
As a result, Green Bay went from being one of the oldest teams in the league to the absolute youngest. And for this reason, among other contributing factors, head coach Matt LaFleur decided that the team would not vote on season-long captains. Instead, he named different captains every week, and it had been that way for the last two seasons.
But on Sunday, many fans noticed several players wearing captain C’s on their jerseys, indicating that LaFleur had let the players vote on their own season-long captains once again.
On Tuesday, he confirmed that it was true and clarified which players had been given that honor:
Packers players elected season-long captains for the first time since 2022, three on O, three on D and one on ST
Jordan Love
Josh Jacobs
Tucker Kraft
Rashan Gary
Quay Walker
Xavier McKinney
Isaiah McDuffieLaFleur said they have to “set the standard and uphold the standard.”

As one can see from the post above, the seven Packers players who will serve as the team captains are Love, Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft, Quay Walker, Rashan Gary, Isaiah McDuffie, and Xavier McKinney.
Of allowing the players to vote for their own captains, LaFleur said, “Those guys wanted to vote for it. Those guys are worthy of that recognition. They’ve all done the little things and hold the high standard. I told them, eyes are always gonna be on them—there’s no ‘off’ switch, both in the building and out of it. You’ve got to set the standards and uphold the standard from everybody else.”
