Green Bay Packers announce contract extension for wide receiver Christian Watson

The Green Bay Packers have a tendency of signing their own players to contract extensions instead of spending big money on the free agent market. Last offseason, they signed star quarterback Jordan Love to a massive four-year contract worth $220 million. This offseason, Green Bay gave right tackle Zach Tom a massive four-year contract worth $88 million.

Of course, there are exceptions to this practice. Last year, the Packers signed safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs as free agents. Both made the Pro Bowl in 2024 and were named team captains for the 2025 NFL season.

This offseason, Green Bay signed left guard Aaron Banks to a four-year $77 million deal and traded for four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Micah Parsons and gave him a four-year $188 million extension.

But on Tuesday, they announced another in-house move to retain one of their own players for the immediate future.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter from ESPN reported on X (formerly Twitter) that the Packers had agreed to a one-year contract extension with current rehabbing wide receiver Christian Watson. He will make over $13 million in 2026:

In three seasons with Green Bay, Watson has 98 receptions for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns. His 14 touchdowns are the second-most of any player taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, trailing only teammate Romeo Doubs and Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London, who each have 15.

Watson is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he is recovering from a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 18 last season. Due to being on the PUP list, he must miss at least the first four games of the Packers’ season.

The fourth-year wide receiver is in the final year of his rookie contract, and signing this mini-extension allows him to focus on getting healthy without pressing too much to come back quickly ahead of free agency.

It also guarantees that Green Bay will be able to pair him with fellow speedster Matthew Golden for at least one more year beyond this one. However, it may also indicate that they will be moving on from Doubs at the end of 2025 as they simply cannot afford to keep everyone.
