Green Bay Packers: ESPN Analyst Reveals Take On Jordan Love Extension Talks
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers may be focused on preparing for the upcoming 2024 NFL season, but there is another major situation going on behind the scenes. Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office are working on a potential long-term contract extension for young quarterback Jordan Love.

Whether that extension will come before the 2024 season is the biggest question. And, if it doesn’t, will Love decide to hold out in order to force an extension to get done?

Needless to say, the Packers have some decisions to make. Love started off the 2023 season in brutal fashion, with some media members clamoring for Green Bay to bench him. However, he ended the season on a tear that placed him among the NFL’s elite at the quarterback position.

Now, the Green Bay Packers will have to decide if they’ve seen enough to know that Love is their long-term answer. One season is not a very big sample size.

ESPN Analyst Reveals Take On Green Bay Packers, Jordan Love Extension Talks

With the massive question hanging in the balance, ESPN NFL analyst Booger McFarland spoke out about the situation. He thinks that the Packers should go ahead and get a new deal done with Love.

“I think it’s time to go ahead and reward this young man with a long-term contract.”

During the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers, Love ended up completing 64.2 percent of his pass attempts for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also picked up 247 yards and four more scores on the ground.

Those numbers give major reason to believe that Love is a future superstar, possibly even a current superstar. But, as previously mentioned, one season is a very small sample size.

Just look at the situation that the New York Giants are in with Daniel Jones after committing long-term following one big season. They’re in a lot of trouble with their decision.

The last thing the Green Bay Packers can afford to do is overpay too early. Love is reportedly looking for a contract worth around $50 million annually. That’s a lot of money to commit to a player who has only started one NFL season at quarterback.

Waiting could only make things worse and drive Love’s price tag up even higher. It could also hurt the relationship between the Packers and their young quarterback.

More than likely, the two sides will find common ground before the start of the 2024 season. The Green Bay Packers do believe that they’ve found their franchise quarterback, but they’re making very sure of their decision before pulling the trigger. No one can blame them for that.
