Green Bay Packers expected to hire Anthony Campanile as linebackers coach
Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

The Packers are hiring Anthony Campanile as the team’s new linebackers coach. That’s according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Green Bay already has its defensive coordinator in place with Jeff Hafley.

Campanile was with the Dolphins. Coincidentally, Miami hired ex Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry as its linebackers coach.

Packers also reportedly are hiring Boston College DL coach

The Journal Sentinel also reported that Vince Oghobasse will be the new defensive line coach. He had been with Boston College.

Campanile was a popular member of Mike McDaniel’s staff, especially with the Hard Knock cameras. And Campanile, 41, comes from a family of coaches. His father and brothers are in the business.

“My dad said we all got into coaching because nobody would hire us for a real job,” Campanile told The Sun-Sentinel.

He interviewed to be the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. There were some reports he was in the running for head coach of Boston College, where he coached in 2016 and 2017. Instead, he ended up in Green Bay as linebackers coach for the Packers. Before Campanile made the jump to the NFL, he also worked in 2019 as linebackers coach for the Michigan Wolverines.

After the season ended, the Packers parted ways with Barry. Green Bay made it to the second round of the NFL playoffs and the team was in position to upset the 49ers and play for a Super Bowl. Barry will coach linebackers with the Dolphins and serve as the defensive run game coordinator. That’s a new job in Miami.

There’s also a new attitude with the Packers. GM Brian Gutekunst recently explained what changed.

“With five minutes to go in that (San Francisco) game, we were squarely thinking that’s where we were headed,” Gutekunst told reporters. “So, I don’t think that’ll ever change here. I mean, that’s really the only goal. We’re not interested in much else.”
