A day after being released by Seattle, former Green Bay Packers receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is joining the 49ers, per NFL insider Ari Meirov. The move keeps him in the NFC West, but the Packers will not see him during the regular season unless he changes teams again. Meirov reports that MVS chose San Francisco over Pittsburgh.
Now a seven-year veteran, MVS has become something of a journeyman since leaving Green Bay. After setting a career low in catches for the second straight year, he will look to revitalize his role on a San Francisco roster always in need of healthy pass catchers.
Between the Saints and Bills last season, Valdes-Scantling hauled in 19 passes for 411 yards and four touchdowns. Always a deep threat, he was essentially limited to that function last year in New Orleans. In Buffalo, he recorded only two receptions and was largely ineffective.
His first year out of Green Bay, MVS was actually a regular cog on Kansas City’s offense. En route to his first Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs, he set career bests in catches (42) and targets (81) and accumulated 687 receiving yards. In the AFC Championship game, he went for six catches, 116 yards, and a TD against the Bengals.
While his involvement decreased the following season, he added to his resume with a touchdown reception in the Chiefs’ repeat Super Bowl victory over the 49ers.
Despite his Kansas City highlights, Scantling enjoyed his most consistent success in Green Bay, where he spent his first four seasons. An immediate contributor, the former 174th overall pick from South Florida was targeted 73 times as a rookie, securing 38 catches for 581 yards. In 2020, he averaged 20.9 yards per catch and hauled in six touchdowns, a personal high alongside his 690 receiving yards that season.
Led by Jauan Jennings, the 49ers could use some receiver room reinforcements, as they will be without Demarcus Robinson for three games due to suspension. To that end, they added Scantling and his former Chiefs teammate, Skyy Moore, who barely played last year.
On social media, some fans viewed the move positively, noting the team’s need at the position. Others seem to hold the opinion that MVS is now washed: “He just collecting a pay check at this point he knows 49rs have no shot this year,” one commenter said.
Regardless, he should come in handy during the first few weeks especially – even at full force, the 49ers are rather thin at wide receiver.
