Green Bay Packers: Injury to Starting Offensive Lineman Could Pave Way for 2024 1st Round Pick Jordan Morgan

Early in the offseason, it was made abundantly clear that there would be some changes to the Green Bay Packers offensive line. Josh Myers, who had been the starting center ever since he was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, was not re-signed following the 2024 season. He signed a one-year $2 million contract with the New York Jets, a number so low that one must believe Green Bay did not even make him an offer.

Then, the Packers went out and signed free agent left guard Aaron Banks to a four-year $77 million contract. This signing indicated that Elgton Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowl left guard, was going to move to center, the position he played in college.

And, as was the case last year, there are other jobs on the offensive line that are up for grabs.

Green Bay Packers LT Rasheed Walker Has a Groin Injury, Jordan Morgan Looks to Take Over

Zach Tom, considered one of the best tackles in the entire NFL, signed a four-year extension himself earlier this offseason as well, locking up the right tackle position in Green Bay for the foreseeable future. But the right guard and left tackle positions remain an open competition.

Last year, Jordan Morgan and Sean Rhyan competed at right guard with the 2024 first round pick seemingly winning the job. However, a shoulder injury limited Morgan to just six games last season, and Rhyan played the position for the majority of the year.

And while Morgan can certainly play guard, the Packers view him as a tackle, perhaps even their left tackle of the future.

Rasheed Walker, of course, has manned the left tackle position ever since David Bakhtiari went down for good with a knee injury. Even though Walker has played well over the past two years, he has not done enough to lock down the job.

And now he has a groin injury:

As Matt LaFleur notes in the post above, Walker will not be out long, but he had already been losing snaps to Morgan with the first team offense as the two compete for the starting left tackle job in 2025.

And given the fact that Green Bay used their second round pick this year on another tackle, Anthony Belton, it is clear that, while they are happy with what Walker has done over the last two seasons, they feel they can get better.

If Morgan is able to separate himself from Walker while the incumbent is dealing with this injury, there could be a changing of the guard at left tackle earlier than some may have expected.
