Green Bay Packers: it’s time to do right by Jordan Morgan in 2026

Back in 2024, many Green Bay Packers fans were hoping the team would select defensive back Cooper DeJean in the first round of the NFL Draft. And, indeed, DeJean was on the board when it came time for the Packers to make their pick. But instead of taking the defensive back from Iowa, Green Bay instead selected left tackle Jordan Morgan out of Arizona.

Ever since, Packers fans have criticized general manager Brian Gutekunst for the pick, and have not always been fair in their evaluations or expectations for Morgan. That being said, the team itself has not allowed him to play his primary position of strength: left tackle.

And this is going to have to change in 2026.

The Green Bay Packers should stick with Jordan Morgan at left tackle

When Green Bay selected Morgan, they did so, presumably, with the intention that he was going to be their left tackle of the future. However, they also liked that he is, in their eyes, capable of playing four out of the five offensive line positions.

Indeed, as a rookie in 2024, Morgan appeared prime to win the starting right guard job. However, a shoulder injury kept him out at the beginning of the season, and another knocked him out early when he had come back. All told, he appeared in just six games as a rookie.

Last year, they had Morgan take reps at multiple positions during training camp, including at left tackle. However, they awarded the starting job to Rasheed Walker and Morgan was relegated to a reserve lineman. In this role, Morgan was forced to play multiple positions on the line as players were up and down with injuries.

As a guard, he performed poorly. However, when filling in for right tackle Zach Tom, he performed extremely well, indicating that is much better suited for the tackle position, whether it be on the right or left side.

With Walker entering free agency and the Packers unlikely to ask him to return, it is time for Green Bay to allow their 2024 first round pick to stick at one position. This is, after all, the presumed reason why they drafted him in the first place.

No more shuffling around, no more “we’ll see.” Either he is the left tackle, or he is a backup swing tackle. They have seen enough of him at guard to know that is not where he plays best.

Gutekunst says they will “cross train” their guys to play multiple positions. Morgan has cross trained for two years now. If they want to have Jordan Love securely protected on his blindside, they must allow Morgan to rep almost exclusively at left tackle this summer so that he is not, as Matt Schneidman of The Athletic put it, “thrown into the fire” come Week One.
