Heading into the 2025 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers were widely expected to target a cornerback. Jaire Alexander has been in rumors all offseason long and the current expectation is that the team will part ways with him before the 2025 season.
When the Packers did not draft a cornerback, it turned some heads. Could Alexander be back for one more year after all?
Even though that would make sense when connecting the dots, a major update has been made following the draft about Alexander's future.
According to a report from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay is still expected to part ways with Alexander despite not adding more help at the position.
"A source familiar with the dealings between the Packers and Alexander said the Packers still were in the market to trade him and were waiting to see if a team might have interest after the draft," Silverstein wrote. "There is no plan for the Packers to bring Alexander back after deciding in February they were moving on and then shopping him to teams."
Nate Hobbs was signed in free agency, but he is the only move the Packers have made at cornerback. Moving on from Alexander would create a major question mark in the secondary.
Over the last two years, Alexander has been unable to stay on the field. He has played in just seven games in each of the last two seasons.
During the 2024 campaign, the 28-year-old cornerback showed he can still play at a high level. In just seven games, Alexander racked up 16 tackles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes.
In the times he's healthy, he is still one of the most talented cornerbacks in the NFL. Green Bay simply seems to have run of patience.
