Green Bay Packers Jordan Love Non-Committal on 2024 Season
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love had an excellent 2023 season. It was his first season as the starter, taking over for future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, who was traded to the New York Jets.

During the 2023 offseason, Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers agreed to a contract extension that eliminated the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. He could earn money through some incentives and bonuses but is going to earn $13.5 million this season.

The contract extension talks between him and the team are currently the biggest storyline at OTAs. It seems like a matter of when, not if, a deal will get done as the Green Bay Packers don’t want to lose their starting quarterback.

But, they could also place the franchise tag on Jordan Love in 2025 if the need arose. They could want to see him play at a high level for another season before committing major long-term money to him.

Alas, Love does hold some cards in these negotiations also. When speaking to reporters earlier this week, he was noncommittal about even stepping on the field in 2024. While he is participating in OTAs, he left the door open about sitting out games during the regular season.

“When asked if he would play the 2024 NFL season, Love answered, “We’ll see. I don’t know yet. We’ll see.” (H/T MSN)

Sitting out games is a worst-case scenario for everyone involved. The Green Bay Packers are a team on the rise and could be contenders in 2024. Jordan Love is a big piece of that puzzle and not having him on the field would be a major detriment.

The other quarterbacks currently on the roster are Sean Clifford and rookie seventh-round pick Michael Pratt. Turning to them in regular season games would drastically change the outlook for the team in 2024. If there is any real worries about Love not playing in games, expect the Packers to ramp up talks with a veteran free agent such as Ryan Tannehill or Teddy Bridgewater.
