The Green Bay Packers are bringing in more competition at wide receiver after the first couple of days of training camp.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is signing Kaden Prather to a one-year contract. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound receiver worked out for the Packers on Thursday and impressed enough to earn a roster spot.
Prather entered the league as a 2025 draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. The Bills chose him in the later rounds, specifically with the 240th overall pick.
His time in Buffalo was limited. He spent most of his only training camp dealing with a hamstring injury and was later waived from injured reserve when the Bills made final cuts last August.
This past spring, Prather found a new opportunity in the United Football League. He joined the Louisville Kings and contributed to their championship run, finishing with nine receptions for 148 yards across nine games.
The Packers currently list 10 wide receivers on the roster. One of them, Brenden Rice, landed on the non-football injury list after suffering a hamstring issue during Wednesday’s practice. Prather could step into that 10th receiver role, though the team will need to make a corresponding move to free up a spot.
Before turning pro, Prather played college football at two schools. He spent his first two seasons at West Virginia and then transferred to Maryland to finish his career.
In 2023 at Maryland, he earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors after recording 42 catches for 666 yards and five touchdowns. His senior year brought a personal best in receptions with 56 catches for 624 yards and four scores.
Scouts have long noted Prather’s size and ability to stretch the field. He possesses the height, weight and straight-line speed to create opportunities downfield, though evaluators have pointed out he is not the most explosive athlete and sometimes struggles to finish routes or secure contested catches.
At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Prather ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds while weighing 203 pounds. He posted a 30-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 9 feet, 6 inches, numbers that ranked below average among receivers that year.
Thursday’s tryout was not limited to Prather. The Packers brought in a total of 10 players for workouts, with most of the group consisting of long snappers and tight ends.
For a Packers receiving corps looking for depth and competition early in camp, Prather offers a familiar athletic profile: a taller outside receiver who can run and potentially contribute on special teams if he sticks.
Whether he earns a more permanent role will depend on how he performs in practices and preseason games over the coming weeks. The signing adds another body to a group that has already seen some early injury setbacks.
Prather’s path from college standout to late-round draft pick to UFL contributor and now Packers signee reflects the kind of persistence many players need to carve out an NFL opportunity.
Green Bay will give him a chance to prove he belongs on an NFL roster this summer.
