Green Bay Packers need to prove their love for Jordan Love

Jordan Love, new starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, is a talented multi-tool player and well-regarded by scouts. He’s going to fail miserably in his effort to replace Aaron Rodgers, though, if the Packers front office doesn’t devote most of their energies this offseason in finding him the right supporting cast.

This team, as it stands right now, will bring about a great, big fail for Love and, as a consequence, a great, big fail for the front office and the organization.

The Packers have either lost or not re-signed Robert Tonyan, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Marcedes Lewis this offseason. That foursome accounted for nearly half of their passing yards last season.

Currently, there are only five wide receivers on the team’s 90-man roster and only three– all rookies last season– had any real playing time.

At tight end, only Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis are returning from last season’s 53-man roster and neither is the kind of pass receiver to benefit Love all that much.

And, given that the team has been slow to act this offseason when it comes to free agency, the burden falls on the front office and their moves in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Packers were in this same spot back in 2008, when Aaron Rodgers was taking the reins from Brett Favre.

The doubters were there, the pressure was on. The front office, however, would make all the right moves that offseason, paving the way for a legacy-building run. They focused mostly on offensive assets, drafting seven offensive players in nine selections to help build a quality crew around the young Rodgers. Among the figures added were wide receiver Jordy Nelson, tight end Jermichael Finley, and offensive lineman Josh Sitton. The team would also add two quarterbacks to serve as insurance, in case Rodgers couldn’t make it.

The end result as an eight year run of making the post season and a Super Bowl victory in 2011.

The Packers need to do the same this draft. They need to hyper-focus on creating a path to success for Jordan Love. They need to surround the talented 24-year-old with the kind of talent that will grow and develop with him.

Nobody is pretending that these moves would make the Packers instant contenders this year. They would, however, turn this “Aaron Rodgers team” into a “Jordan Love team” and help pave the way for a legacy of success in the future.

If the Packers simply draft to their many needs and try to fill holes without a focus on the offense, they may as well start looking for the next starting quarterback after Love. They may as well resign themselves to bottom tier NFL status until lower draft picks bring a new wave of talent down the line.
