The Green Bay Packers now have another quarterback in the fold. Just after cutting Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma loose and leaving Jordan Love and Malik Willis as the only ones in the Packers’ QB room, Green Bay decided to add another hurler.
On Wednesday, it was reported that the Packers have signed former Houston Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune to their practice squad. With this move, the chances of Clifford and Elgersma reuniting with Green Bay take a significant blow.
The 26-year-old Tune has 13 career appearances in the NFL so far in his pro career, with just one start to show for. That was during a Week 9 matchup in 2023 between Tune and the Arizona Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland.
Via Zach Kruse of Packers Wire:
Tune’s only NFL start came in Week 9 of his rookie season, and it can’t be viewed as a fond memory. Tune completed 11 of 20 passes for 58 yards, threw two interceptions, took seven sacks and lost a fumble during a 27-0 defeat to the Cleveland Browns on the road. Counting the lost yardage of the sacks, Tune finished with 17 net passing yards. The Cardinals, who fell to 1-8, finished 1-for-13 on third or fourth down and didn’t advance further than the Browns’ 44-yard line. Tune only started because Kyler Murray hadn’t yet returned from a knee injury and the Cardinals traded away Josh Dobbs (to Minnesota) at the trade deadline.
All that being said, Tune had an otherwise solid college resume. In five seasons with the Houston Cougars, he recorded 11,996 passing yards and 104 touchdowns against 41 interceptions on a 63.8 pass completion rate through 47 games. He is also quite familiar with Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden. The two played a season (2022) together at Houston, when Tune passed for a career-high 40 touchdowns.
