Green Bay Packers offensive line given top ranking by PFF despite injuries

When the Green Bay Packers lost All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari and Pro Bowl left guard Elgton Jenkins to knee injuries in 2020-21, other players were able to fill the void they left. At the time, Yosh Nijman stepped in at left tackle and Jon Runyan Jr. played left guard.

The right side of line was held down by Billy Turner at right tackle and rookie Royce Newman at right guard. Josh Myers and Lucas Patrick shared center duties in 2021 while Corey Linsley won All-Pro at the position in 2020 before leaving via free agency.

Now the year is 2023 and there have been many changes on the offensive line, as well as on the team in general. However, the Packers once again have found themselves in a position where they are without their two best offensive linemen. In their place, new young offensive linemen have stepped up and have provided Jordan Love with the best pass protection in the NFL.

PFF Gives the Green Bay Packers Offensive Line Their Top Ranking

Every week, PFF publishes an updated ranking of each offensive line in the NFL. The Packers have always been near the top of these rankings in the past, but with the loss of Bakhtiari and Jenkins, and with Green Bay facing a tough New Orleans Saints defense, many expected them to faulter.

They did not, and even though Jenkins will definitely be out on Thursday and no one knows when Bakhtiari will be able to play, PFF gave the Packers’ offensive line their Week Four number one ranking:

Projected Week 4 starters:

LT Rasheed Walker

LG Royce Newman

C Josh Myers

RG Jon Runyan

RT Zach Tom

  • Second-year left tackle Rasheed Walker played in the injured David Bakhtiari‘s place. Walker allowed just one pressure on 55 dropbacks.

  • The Packers’ offensive line leads the NFL after three weeks with a pass-blocking efficiency rating of 93.9.

Best player: Zach Tom
  • Tom has yet to allow a sack or a quarterback hit this season.

In the PFF rankings, both Newman’s and Myers’ names are highlighted in red, indicating they are the weak links on the line. This is certainly true as Myers has struggled since he was drafted and Newman was a potential roster cut going into the season.

Still, it is hard to argue with results. Love has only been sacked three times this season and the line has played well in pass protection, no matter who is in there.

Zach Tom Was Injured Against the New Orleans Saints

Zach Tom was injured during the win against the New Orleans Saints. He suffered a knee injury, but nothing as serious as the ones suffered by Bakhtiari and Jenkins.

The Packers did not practice on Tuesday, but head coach Matt LaFleur said Tom would not have practiced if they did. Yesterday, the team held a walk-through and Tom was listed as a limited participant on the team’s injury report.

It sounds like he is trending towards playing on Thursday night.

What Do the Futures of David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins Look Like on the Green Bay Packers?

The Packers signed Jenkins to a massive contract extension last season, so it is safe to say that his future with the team is secure for the next few seasons. He is also a freak athlete that can play all five positions on the offensive line at a Pro Bowl level.

As for Bakhtiari, this season will likely be his final year in Green Bay. Even if he was completely healthy this year, his $40 million cap hit will be too much for the Packers. While he could be extended, second-year left tackle Rasheed Walker, who was a seventh round pick last year, has played extremely well in Bakhtiari’s absence.

It will likely be Walker who holds down that left tackle position for years to come.
