After losing dynamic backup Malik Willis to the Miami Dolphins in free agency, general manager Brian Gutekunst needs a reliable option behind starter Jordan Love. Recent rumors link the Packers to veteran free agent Jimmy Garoppolo. However, prominent NFL analysts are issuing strong warnings against bringing the two-time Super Bowl champion to Green Bay.

Analysts point directly to Garoppolo’s recent body of work as the primary reason to avoid him. It has been over a year since he threw a meaningful regular-season pass, and his last stint as a starter raised major red flags.

During his 2023 campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders, Garoppolo struggled heavily with his decision-making and arm talent. Among quarterbacks with at least 50 dropbacks that season, he posted the fifth-highest checkdown rate at 16 percent. He finished 44th in the league in passer rating with a low 77.7 mark. Even more concerning, he threw nine interceptions compared to just seven touchdowns. He spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams, but he only saw the field for late-game kneel-downs and mop-up duty.

A Clash of Styles and Durability Concerns

Beyond the statistical decline, Garoppolo presents a stark stylistic contrast to what the Packers currently value at the quarterback position. Malik Willis succeeded in Green Bay partly because his dual-threat ability forced defenses to respect his legs. Jordan Love also uses his mobility to extend plays outside the pocket.

Garoppolo, who turns 35 later this year, operates almost exclusively as a stationary pocket passer. This immobility limits what head coach Matt LaFleur can call if Love misses time. Furthermore, Garoppolo carries a well-documented history of injuries. Because Love has battled his own health issues recently, Green Bay needs a backup they can depend on physically. Relying on an aging, immobile quarterback with durability concerns creates a dangerous scenario for a team with playoff aspirations.

Better Backup Options for Green Bay

Instead of settling for Garoppolo, the Packers should explore quarterbacks who better fit their modern offensive scheme. Analysts suggest a few intriguing names that make more sense for Green Bay’s roster.

Anthony Richardson stands out as a high-upside target. The former Indianapolis Colts first-round pick possesses an elite arm and incredible rushing ability. Acquiring Richardson would mirror the successful reclamation project the Packers executed with Willis last season. His mobility perfectly aligns with LaFleur’s offensive philosophy.

Alternatively, the Packers could consider veteran Russell Wilson on a one-year contract. While Wilson is no longer the superstar he was in Seattle, he retains enough mobility to navigate the pocket and execute a game plan. He offers a much safer floor than Garoppolo if called upon for a spot start. Green Bay could also choose to elevate Desmond Ridder, though relying solely on him carries its own set of risks.
