Getting your name called out with high praise from your coach is as good as it gets for a rookie, and that's exactly what Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. did for a standout defender.
The Commanders won the lottery when Trey Amos fell to them at pick 61, and he's been nothing but spectacular since he first arrived in Washington.
It's expected that a rookie has a slow start or hits some bumps as they get used to a new system in the NFL, but Amos ignored all of that and ended up being one of the best defenders at training camp. Coach Whitt Jr. said that Amos has "had a good day every day," and that's something you never hear a coach say in training camp about a rookie.
The battle between Jayden Daniels and the secondary has been one of the more entertaining back-and-forth battles I've seen in a while. Amos got the best of the franchise QB with a handful of pass breakups and interceptions.

Amos is projected to be the outside starting corner opposite of Marshon Lattimore, while Mike Sainristil goes back in the slot, and he can have a season just as impactful as Sainristil did last year. Sainristil has also praised Amos throughout training camp and knows that he brings something special to the secondary.
The rookie corner already has a great connection and trust with Whitt Jr., and he has the mindset you're looking for in a star corner.
“He’s [Joe Whitt Jr.] just like, ‘don't let nobody catch the ball on you," Amos told the media laughingly. "That's the main thing. I'm just trying to do my job to the best of my ability at all times. Sometimes they might catch a ball on you just know that they have to earn it. Going against me. You just got to keep on playing, keep on chopping regardless.”
I like what I see from Commanders rookie CB Trey Amos.

Head coach Dan Quinn usually waits and makes rookies earn their starting spot on the roster, but he wasted no time giving Amos a starting position on the first unofficial depth chart. He's actually the only rookie this season to earn that honor so far.
We aren't sure how much playing time Amos will get in the preseason, but he can get the hype train going full steam ahead before the season starts if he can show out in the three games. Amos has the traits and aesthetics to be an elite corner in the league and make an impact on the secondary in just his rookie season.
