Matt Vautour of MassLive is among the numerous media members who have openly wondered how second-year New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye will respond after he endured a nightmare outing in his club's 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX this past Sunday.
Retired quarterback Kurt Warner experienced all kinds of ups and downs during his Hall of Fame career. During a chat with Karen Guregian of MassLive, Warner offered Maye some advice.
"You have to be able to step back and go, 'Look what we did. We were four wins a year ago, 14 wins this year. And the Super Bowl. I almost won an MVP.' Just to put it into perspective," Warner explained. "He’s young, and there’s a long way to go. You can’t let moments like this shape how you move forward. You can’t move forward trying to do too much, trying to make up for it."
Before Maye produced zero scoring drives over the first three quarters of Super Bowl LX and committed three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions) in the double-digit defeat, he finished second to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in 2025 MVP Award voting.
Meanwhile, Warner went 1-2 as a Super Bowl starter during his legendary career. Thus, he knows a little bit about what Maye is going through this week.
"I remember when we lost our first Super Bowl (to the Patriots in 2002)," Warner recalled, "I felt like the next year we were trying to make up for it. We didn’t play well in the Super Bowl, and we started out [0-5] the following year. We started to go in the opposite direction. That’s the biggest thing. You’re going to feel the pain. It’s going to be tough for a while. Then you step back and you’re able to celebrate what you were able to accomplish."
On Monday, one-time NFL MVP quarterback and current analyst Boomer Esiason insisted he isn't worried about Maye's ability to bounce back from this significant disappointment. Warner seems to believe that Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel will have Maye right by the time New England has to play a meaningful game this coming September.
"He’s in his second year," Warner added about Maye. "There’s a lot of growing to go on. I think that’s the thing you have to realize. The regular season was great. The postseason wasn’t. There’s room to grow. You’ve got to accept that, and you have to figure out where those things are, and make sure you’re moving forward, and not settling for, 'Hey, I had a great season.' I don’t think Coach Vrabel is going to allow that. I think he has perspective of, 'Hey, they’re only a year into this thing.' It still hurts, and it’s okay for it to hurt. But they’re just in the beginning part of that building process, and Drake has to know the same thing."
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Patriots tied for fourth among the betting favorites at +1300 odds to win Super Bowl LXI next February. Perhaps lessons Maye learned this winter will help him get his hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy roughly 12 months from now.
