Hamstring, Hip Keep Two Jets' Defensive Starters Out of Practice Wednesday

The list is getting longer with only two games in the books. 

New York Jets' head coach Robert Saleh labeled eight players as either a non-participant or limited prior to Wednesday's practice in Florham Park.

Starting free safety Tony Adams is a recent addition to the list after suffering a hamstring injury late in the first half of the Week 2 road game against the Dallas Cowboys.

"Tony Adams won't practice today," said Saleh. "Duane Brown, normal, he won't practice today. [Mekhi] Becton, same. John Franklin-Myers won't practice today. [Cornerback] Michael Carter, Quincy [Williams] and Breece [Hall] are limited."

In his first year as a starter, Adams gingerly jogged off with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter after playing 32 snaps on Sunday. On what was his final rep of the day, he tackled Cowboys' receiver CeeDee Lamb after a 20-yard gain and came up lame.

Franklin-Myers's unavailability is a new development, but Saleh does not see it carrying over into the weekend. The starting defensive end was on field for 53 percent of the defensive snaps at Dallas. 

"He's dealing with a hip, but he should be good to go for the game," said Saleh on Wednesday. "When you look at all the defensive guys, having played almost 90 plays, we're just trying to take it easy on that side of the ball."

The Cowboys officially ran 83 offensive plays in the 30-10 win, keeping the Jets' defense on the field for 87 snaps and 42:15 of gametime. 

Brown and Becton have been on a maintenance program after recovering from offseason surgeries. The two offensive tackles have not missed a snap over the season's first two contests. Hall has also been on the injury report for the past two weeks as he works back to form following ACL surgery. The second-year running back has started both games but has been working on a "pitch count."

Carter and Williams, two defensive starters, both left Sunday's loss to Dallas due to injury. The slot cornerback nicked up his elbow in the second quarter and the linebacker hurt his knee on the last play prior to the second-half 2:00 warning. 

Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein, who missed Sunday's game due to a groin injury, is also expected to be a DNP today. The Jets are taking a wait-and-see approach with Zuerlein and have Austin Seibert ready to go on the Practice Squad.

The official injury report will be filed with the NFL office by 4:00 pm ET on Wednesday afternoon.
