Harsh truth comes for Jahan Dotson as Eagles write on the proverbial wall

Pay attention to anything long enough, and you'll begin to recognize patterns. Raise your hand if watching stocks scroll on news channels ever convinced you that your destiny was to work on Wall Street. If you're not bold enough to take that stance, here's one of the football variety. How many of you have watched the Philadelphia Eagles long enough to know they would never take a safety in Round 1, not even one who is as good as Malaki Starks?

Sure, there are exceptions to every rule. We never thought Philly would pay a ton of money to a running back either. Look how that worked out. Still, we've seen 90 NFL Drafts. The Birds have only selected a defensive back in Round 1 four times.

Kyle Hamilton and Earl Thomas couldn't make them acquire a safety on night one. That being said, we'd venture to state it will be long before someone comes along and makes them do so. We have about as good a chance at seeing them invest heavily in their third wide receiver.

Studying their pattern suggests there's a bit of a revolving door there. That said, even though we probably shouldn't say this, we have known Jahan Dotson's fate for a while, even though reports began circulating on the eve of the 2025 NFL Draft's first night.

The Eagles are declining Jahan Dotson's fifth-year option.

The 2025-26 Eagles 53-man roster hasn't been announced yet. We're months away from that happening, but Philly has already made decisions that will affect them past September. Recently, they signed Cam Jurgens to a four-year extension.

That being said, the writing was seemingly on the wall for Jahan Dotson a long time ago. We officially, however, learned that he won't be part of Philly's long-term future as reports surfaced that this figures to be his final Eagles season.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz recently reported the Birds have no plans to exercise the fifth-year option. By being a former first-round selection (2022), there is one baked into the current rookie deal he is still playing on and honoring.

One has to wonder if that means Philly is also looking for an avenue to trade him.

It's a topic worth discussing. Why keep him on the roster if there is any possibility he'll be playing, but doing so while dissatisfied that he has no guarantees for the future?

Keep an eye on Jordan Davis as well. He too was a first-round selection in 2022. He too has a fifth-year option that Philly has the right to exercise.

What's intriguing on the Jordan Davis front was that the Eagles knocked out Jurgens' extension first. Perhaps we could deduce that Philly values Cam above Jordan, which is intriguing because Cam was a second-round selection.

Then again, there's also a chance that there's no connection. We know Philly loves Davis, and knowing he has a fifth-year option gave the Birds the comfort of knowing they can hammer out Jurgens' deal and work on Jordan's later... maybe...
