Pockets of New York Giants fans posting on social media called for the club to part ways with defensive coordinator Shane Bowen almost immediately after the team's historic collapse during its 33-32 loss at the Denver Broncos this past Sunday.
While speaking with reporters on Monday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed he would not make any major changes to his staff ahead of the team's game at the Philadelphia Eagles (5-2) this coming Sunday. It sounds like Giants linebacker and team captain Bobby Okereke is just fine with Daboll's decision.
"100 percent," Okereke responded when asked during his media availability on Monday if he and others still support Bowen, per the Giants' website. "We're all hands on deck. We're all bought in. Everyone's got to look at the man in the mirror. It's easier to point the finger, but from a team perspective, it's better to point the thumb and figure out what I can do better as an individual. So, that's what we're all about to do. And we're excited for this upcoming opportunity."
The Giants shockingly surrendered 33 fourth-quarter points in Denver, the final three of which were scored via a walk-off field goal after Broncos quarterback Bo Nix completed a pair of passes against a soft defense. After the loss, Giants pass-rusher Brian Burns seemed to voice his frustrations regarding how Bowen handled the game's last drive.
In September, Bowen expressed regret after the Giants played a soft zone that resulted in Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey making a game-tying 64-yard field goal at the end of regulation of the Week 2 contest. Dallas went on to win that game in overtime.
Okereke and others in the Giants locker room may find themselves wondering what could have been had the club notched wins over Dallas and Denver. Instead, Big Blue will enter Week 8 at 2-5.
Nevertheless, Okereke challenged his teammates to get off the mat for the Week 6 rematch against the reigning Super Bowl champions. The Giants defeated the Eagles 34-17 at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 9.
"You got to have conviction," Okereke added. "It's the NFL, guys are great. So, if you're playing, you know, trepidatious and maybe with some hesitation or doubt...you're going to get beat. So, we're all bought in. We have great conviction, and we're just excited to make the corrections from this loss."
Certain NFL insiders seemingly believe making corrections won't be of much help to the Giants on the final Sunday of October. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Eagles as 7.5-point favorites for the matchup that will take place at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
