The New York Jets went through a bit of a panic sale at the trade deadline, but they didn't move on from Breece Hall.
They failed to find someone willing to meet their asking price of a third-round pick for the talented running back. Since they can get a compensatory pick if he leaves, it made sense to hold onto him.
But now that Hall is going to be highly coveted in free agency, they don't have many options to keep him in town.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the league-wide belief is that they'll apply the seldom-used transition tag on him.
"There’s a current belief in league circles that the Jets eventually will apply the transition tag," Florio wrote.
The tag would pay Hall between $11.5M and $11.9M, fully guaranteed, for the upcoming campaign. This tag gives the Jets an opportunity to match any offer he gets.
That said, there's still a chance that Aaron Glenn's team ends up empty-handed.
"There’s another important factor to consider. If a team applies the transition tag and doesn’t match an offer sheet, the player’s departure doesn’t count toward the next year’s slate of compensatory draft picks. If Hall simply exits as a free agent, it does," Florio added.
Hall was, again, the lone bright spot on the Jets' ever-struggling offense. Despite the negative game script and subpar quarterback play, he still turned 243 carries into 1,065 yards and four touchdowns and averaged 4.4 yards per carry, according to Pro Football Reference.
