HBCU stars catch attention of NFL after draft snub

The 2025 NFL Draft told a familiar story for HBCU football—only one player was selected. But while cameras turned off after the seventh round, the dreams of several HBCU standouts were just getting started.

A New Route to the League

Undrafted Free Agent signings have become a vital lifeline for HBCU talent, and this year was no exception. Jackson State defensive back Robert McDaniel inked a deal with the Washington Commanders, showcasing the tenacity that earned him 45 tackles and 3 interceptions last season. South Carolina State linebacker Aaron Smith, who recorded 86 tackles and 6 sacks in 2024, was signed by the New York Jets. The Denver Broncos doubled down on HBCU receivers, signing North Carolina Central’s Joaquin Davis and Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler—two players who turned heads during their Pro Day workouts.

Minicamp Invites Still Matter

While UDFA deals grab headlines, rookie minicamp invites offer a shot at making noise without a contract in hand. Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan received a call from the New York Giants after rushing for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns. Morgan State’s Elijah Williams is headed to Minnesota, hoping to replicate the success of past camp invitees who earned roster spots. As former Dallas Cowboy Markquese Bell proved, going undrafted doesn’t define your ceiling—Bell now boasts a $9 million deal after entering the league without hearing his name called.

Proving Ground for HBCU Excellence

There’s a reason nearly 30% of NFL rosters are made up of undrafted players. HBCU athletes, often overlooked on draft day, continue to grind their way onto depth charts. With programs like Jackson State, Florida A&M, and South Carolina State producing NFL-ready players, these opportunities reaffirm what HBCU fans have long known: talent doesn’t need a draft pick to be recognized.

If the NFL won’t spotlight HBCU athletes on draft day, it’s up to us to do it every day after. Support your alma maters. Share their stories. And keep watching—because these players aren’t just showing up, they’re about to show out.
