'Heck of a runner' — NFL coordinator gives Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving his flowers in prestigious list

Bucky Irving had a tremendous rookie season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024.  The Oregon product burst onto the scene and became the catalyst for one of the best offenses in the NFL, as the Bucs would go on to win their fourth straight NFC South title.

Irving finished with 1122 rushing yards on 207 carries (5.4 ypc) with 8 touchdowns, adding 47 catches for 392 yards.  And it was enough for coaches, executes, and scouts around the league to take notice.

ESPN's Ben Solak put out a list of the top 10 running backs in the NFL based on the votes and input from aforementioned league personnel, and Irving finished just off the list with an honorable mention.

This was ESPN's criteria for the ranking, per Solak:

Voters gave us their 10 best players at a position, then we compiled the results and ranked candidates based on number of top-10 votes, composite average and dozens of interviews, with research and film study help from ESPN NFL analyst Matt Bowen. In total, more than 70 voters submitted a ballot on at least one position, and in many cases all positions. Additional voting and follow-up calls with those surveyed helped us break any ties.

ESPN quoted an anonymous NFL coordinator, who said the following about Irving:

"Combination of speed, quicks and contact balance. Heck of a runner. Rarely goes down on first contact."

That's a pretty accurate summary of what Irving brought to the table for Tampa Bay in 2024.  Irving might not carry a frame among the biggest backs in the league, but his yardage after contact was extremely impressive.  He averaged 2.7 yards after contact, which was tied for third place in the league. The only two players who averaged more were Derrick Henry and Tank Bigsby at 2.8.  Interestingly enough, fellow Buc Rachaad White also averaged 2.7 yards after contact in 2024. Irving also was a top 10 running back in yards before contact with 2.7, coming in tied for ninth.

The Bucs will have their full complement of pass catchers back in 2024 - with first round pick Emeka Egbuka added to the mix - to continue to provide a downfield passing threat that should continue to allow for opportunities for Irving, White, and the Bucs' rushing attack to thrive.

We'll see soon enough if Irving can put take another step this fall to land higher on the list next offseason.
