Heisman winner DeVonta Smith expected to make Eagles debut vs. Patriots

While his first NFL training camp has been hampered by injury, Philadelphia Eagles rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith is expected to make his preseason debut on Thursday night against the New England Patriots, John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported.

Smith was previously listed as day-to-day with a knee injury he sustained a few weeks back but returned to full-team practice this week ahead of the Eagles' face-off with the Pats.

"I always think it's necessary for guys to play in preseason and go through that," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told the press earlier in the week, via CBS Sports. "We are still evaluating. We have a preliminary plan of what we want Thursday to be like, but we got a lot of good work (Monday) and we will have a lot of good work today so that's going to be constantly changing with every player."

Expectations are high for Smith, who enters his first camp after being the 10th overall pick from this year's NFL Draft. Even with 2020 first-round pick Jalen Reagor and speedster Quez Watkins in the fold, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Smith is expected to be Philadelphia's No.1 receiver thanks to already-established chemistry with quarterback Jalen Hurts. There two were teammates at Alabama before Hurts transferred to Oklahoma.
