Help is on the way for Maxx Crosby as Raiders sign star DT

The Las Vegas Raiders are finally getting star defensive end Maxx Crosby the help he needs.

Per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are signing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to a four-year, $110M deal with $84.75M guaranteed.

Crosby — a three-time Pro Bowler — is one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL, but he played on 1,081 defensive snaps in 17 games last season, the second-highest mark of his career. Clearly, this pace isn't sustainable, as he underwent knee surgery on Jan. 17.

Wilkins, 28, recorded career highs in sacks (nine), pressures (30), and quarterback knockdowns (14) in 17 games with the Miami Dolphins last season. He's durable, too. According to The Athletic, he hasn't missed a game over the past three seasons.

"Wilkins is an incredibly versatile defensive tackle, given where he aligns and his ability to blend quickness with power," wrote former NFL general manager and The Athletic contributor Randy Mueller. "He can play in any scheme. He's strong at the point of attack but also has athletic ability and range. He's a really good player, and his value keeps climbing after a career season."

The Raiders defense drastically improved under head coach Antonio Pierce, finishing seventh in the league in points allowed (19.5). And potential stars emerged, such as DE Malcolm Koonce, who finished with a career-high 23 pressures in 11 starts.

Adding Wilkins should help the unit reach the next level. A stingy defense ensures the Raiders can compete in the AFC West, where they face elite QBs Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) and Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) twice a year.
