The Packers’ wide receiving corps was dealt a significant blow when Jayden Reed fractured his collarbone last Thursday night in a victory over the Washington Commanders, but reinforcements could be on the way for Green Bay.
While veteran and emerging star tight end Tucker Kraft could see his role continue to expand in the passing game, one of quarterback Jordan Love’s most prolific targets could be getting back on the field soon.
Christian Watson has opened the season on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in the regular season finale against the Chicago Bears, back in January and is working his way back to returning.
“I’m not 100 percent sure, it’s up to the training staff, but I’d assume, whenever my window opens up, I’d be able to work in a little bit,” Watson told reporters Monday.
As soon as the coaches and the Packers’ trainers believe Watson is healthy enough to get back on the practice field, the organization will have 21 days to determine whether he can be activated to the 53-man roster, or if his injury is still lingering, revert him to full-season injured reserve. All signs, though, point to Watson making progress.
Watson is required to miss the first four games of the season, being on PUP, but his eventual return could lift the Packers’ reeciving corps that is working towards rookie speedster Matthew Golden getting on the same page with Love, and hoping to fill the void left behind by Reed for the next six to eight weeks.
Through his first three seasons, Watson has caught 98 passes for 1,653 yards and 14 touchdowns, underscoring his potential impact in an offense that is looking more explosive by the week.
