Trey Hendrickson is attempting to hold out from the Cincinnati Bengals as he seeks a new contract extension.
The Bengals are scheduled to pay Hendrickson $16 million for playing this season. In an effort to increase that to his desired amount, he's expected to skip out all offseason activities with the team, even the required portions such as mandatory minicamp.
Cincinnati will hold its mandatory minicamp from June 10-12, and if Hendrickson doesn't report, he'll be subject to fines. Hendrickson even revealed last month head coach Zac Taylor let him know about said fines weeks ahead of time.
So how much money is Hendrickson at risk to lose? It gets more expensive as minicamp progresses through the week. The following amounts are courtesy of OverTheCap.com:
1st day: $17,462
2nd day: $34,925
3rd day: $52,381
If Hendrickson misses just the first day, he could be out a maximum of $17,462. If he misses the first two days, the Bengals could fine him another $34,925. If he's absent for all three days, he'd be subject to losing another $52,381.
That's a maximum total of $104,768 Hendrickson is at risk of losing this week, and all signs point to him taking the risk.
A little over $100,000 is minuscule when a player is vying to be paid over 300 times that on a per year basis. Compared to the salary attached to his current contract, it's about a sixth of a percent.
Hendrickson knows he can eat the fines if he has to, and the Bengals are likely to fine him as it is their right to do so. If such is the case, the fines cannot be rescinded since Hendrickson is a vested veteran and not under a rookie contract.
No one in Cincinnati is expecting Hendrickson to roll through for minicamp at this point, so his camp has likely already accounted for the incoming loss.
We'll find out for sure later this week when the Bengals take the practice fields for the last time until training camp in late July.
