The Washington Commanders made some major roster changes this offseason. No group figures to look more different in 2025 than the offensive line.
Washington made a blockbuster trade to acquire five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans. They also used the No. 29 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Josh Conerly Jr. to slot in on the right side of the protection.
That leaves an odd man out in talented 2024 third-round pick Brandon Coleman, who played at left tackle last season and figured to take on a bigger role in 2025 before the Tunsil and Conerly additions. However, it seems Washington might have a solution.
Based on a video from OTAs, it looks like the Commanders are lining Coleman up at left guard, a position he has experience at during his college days. It's unknown if Washington intends to have him play there during the season, but if so, it could fix several issues.

Despite the new faces who were brought in, the Commanders will have a hole to fill at the right guard position for at least the first part of this season. Sam Cosmi continues to recover from a torn ACL he suffered during Washington's divisional-round win over the Detroit Lions. It's unclear when the veteran will return, but typically, this is at least a 9-to-10 month recovery.
The Commanders have options for who can slot in for Cosmi. One is Andrew Wylie, who started at right tackle last season. Another is Nate Herbig, an experienced interior presence who arrived from the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency. There's also Nick Allegretti, who played left guard last season and figured to serve that same role again in 2025 — but perhaps not.
Moving Allegretti to the right side of the line, allowing Coleman to fill in at left guard, seems like it could be an ideal scenario for the Commanders. It's also something the coaching staff is experimenting with, reading between the lines.
The second-year player from TCU has Pro Bowl potential at the guard spot and would be buried on the depth chart at tackle. The veteran three-time Super Bowl champion is seen as a stop-gap in Washington, after spending his first five seasons as a backup with the Kansas City Chiefs. Allegretti can hold down the fort until Cosmi returns.
With the arrivals of Tunsil and Conerly, the Commanders should have one of the most improved offensive lines in football this upcoming season. This potential shakeup could make them even better.
