The Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver room added some speed this offseason when they signed WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown in free agency and drafted NFL Scouting Combine 40-yard dash record-holder Xavier Worthy. But how fast is the wide receiver group as a whole now? Really fast if you're to take the word of some of the players in it.
Chiefs veteran WR Justin Watson used to consider himself as someone in competition for being the fastest receiver on the team. Now, he's content to yield that title to one of his new teammates in Worthy or Brown.
"The last two years, we always had a lot of debates and conversations about who is the fastest," Watson said. "I would always put my name in that ring, but I think I'm going to defer it to one of those two guys. Those guys can absolutely fly. One of those two are definitely the fastest right now."
Watson admitted that while the team is still in the early stages of the offseason, which are reserved for finding out what everyone is good at, what's apparent in abundance is that they've got some very fast players on this football team. Worthy and Brown, being among the fastest.
(My) first impression is just that those guys are blazers," Watson said. "They're a different level of speed. Defenses are going to have to back up."
Defenses having to adjust to properly account for the speed is exactly what Andy Reid and Matt Nagy want because it's going to open up some new dimensions for the offense. That type of deadly speed will help every facet of the game and not just the deep passing game.
Brown has noticed that speed within the wide receiver room himself. When asked about it, he could hardly contain his excitement. You could see it all over his face when talking about how fast the receiver room is as a whole.
"We're fast," Brown said with a smirk. "We're definitely fast. We're going to put a lot of pressure on people, for sure. I just think it's going to be exciting. I think everyone should be excited for it."
Chiefs fans will have to wait until July's training camp practices to see it for themselves, but it's hard not to take Brown's words and get a little bit excited for what's to come. This could be the fastest wide receiver the Chiefs have seen since the OG Legion of Zoom back in 2018-2019.
