House Oversight Committee will subpoena Commanders owner Dan Snyder

In a move that most people saw coming, the U.S. House Oversight Committee will subpoena Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder to appear before Congress after he twice refused to appear for the first hearing on Wednesday.

"Mr. Snyder's refusal to testify sends a clear signal that he is more concerned about protecting himself than coming clean to the American public," House chairwoman Carolyn Maloney said during Wednesday's hearing, via CBS Sports. "If the NFL is unwilling to hold Mr. Snyder accountable, then I am prepared to do so. The Committee will not be deterred in its investigation to uncover the truth of workplace misconduct at the Washington Commanders."

Snyder has been under investigation since late last year for creating a toxic workplace surrounding the Washington Commanders, as well as for sexual harassment and assault toward former female employees. His legal team denied two previous invitations to be present for Wednesday's hearing on the grounds Snyder has business abroad he couldn't reschedule. It was later revealed he was attending an awards show in France instead.

"(Rather) than show up and take responsibility for his actions, he chose to skip town," Maloney said. "Apparently, Mr. Snyder is in France, where he has docked his luxury yacht near a resort town. That should tell you just how much respect he has for women in the workplace."

Maloney also accused NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who was present to testify on Wednesday, of not doing a good enough job investigating Snyder and the Commanders himself. During Wednesday's hearing, the committee revealed in a lengthy memo that Snyder conducted a shadow probe to steer the investigation away from himself and his conduct while overseeing the Commanders franchise.

There is no word yet on the exact date Snyder is expected to appear before the committee.
