Houston Texans announce player has tested positive for COVID, shut down team facilities

The Houston Texans are the latest NFL team to have a player test positive for COVID-19, as the team announced this morning they would be shutting down team facilities after discovering the positive test Wednesday night.

"In consultation with the NFL and medical experts, we have made the decision to close the facility and conduct all operations virtually today," the team said in a statement. "The player immediately self-isolated and contact tracing has begun. We will follow the NFL's intensive protocols and guidance regarding the team's operations. The health and safety of our team, as well as our entire staff, are of highest priority."

The Texans are not even the first team to have a coronavirus case this week, as the Denver Broncos announced on Tuesday that general manager John Elway and CEO Joe Ellis had both tested positive. But the team was "confident the transmissions originated from outside the building," which would hopefully mean none of the players or staff have contracted COVID-19 as well.

The Texans are set to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, and the division rivalry game has not been rescheduled or canceled due to the positive test for now.

This is just the latest in the NFL's cat-and-mouse relationship with the coronavirus. The league chose to forgo a bubble strategy in favor of consistent testing and protocol, but so far that plan has led to mixed results at best. Nearly every week, a new team reveals a player or staff member has tested positive, forcing the league to attempt to keep things afloat with as few scheduling changes as possible.
