When C.J. Stroud went down with a concussion, you could almost hear the collective groan from Houston. The city probably thought its Cinderella season was about to turn back into a pumpkin. Backup Quarterback Davis Mills didn’t get the memo. He led the Texans to a gritty 23-19 upset over the Buffalo Bills, and suddenly, Houston is looking like a legitimate threat.
It wasn’t always pretty, but it was a masterclass in what happens when one side of the ball decides it simply will not lose. While Mills was managing the game and making clutch throws, the Texans defense was busy turning Josh Allen’s night into a complete nightmare.
Remember when Josh Allen was the boogeyman of the AFC? The Texans defense must have forgotten. They sacked the reigning MVP a career-high eight times. It was a relentless assault. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter looked like a pair of lions fighting over the last gazelle on the savanna, combining for 4.5 sacks and generally making the Bills’ offensive line look like a group of startled mannequins.
Allen finished the night with a measly 5.4 net yards per attempt and looked visibly frustrated. “I have to be better on that,” Allen said. “I just got my butt kicked for three hours.” Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott was equally displeased, stating, “When they hit the quarterback 12 times, I don’t like that… It’s not a healthy way to play.”
This win wasn’t a fluke; it was a statement. While the defense was busy collecting sacks like they were Pokémon cards, the offense did just enough to seal the deal. Davis Mills, now a cool 3-0 as a starter, tossed two touchdowns, including a beautiful strike to Jayden Higgins right before halftime that gave the Texans a lead they wouldn’t surrender.
The real hero of the night, however, was rookie Calen Bullock. He didn’t just have one interception; he had two, including the game-sealing pick in the final minute. He even had a pick-six called back by a penalty, which is the football equivalent of hitting a home run that gets chalked off because your bat was corked. Still, his performance was a massive part of why the Texans are now sniffing around the top of the AFC South.
After the game, Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair didn’t mince words: “We definitely have the best defense in the league.” It’s hard to argue with him after watching them dismantle a Super Bowl contender on national television. The Houston Texans are no longer just a feel-good story; they’re a problem for the rest of the NFL.
