Just when the Houston Texans thought they might catch a break, the injury bug bit again. It’s the classic “one step forward, two steps back” shuffle that no NFL team wants to dance, especially not in Week 2. While the team is rolling out the welcome mat for starting Guard Ed Ingram’s return, they’re waving a temporary goodbye to three other key starters. How will the team fare without these key pieces?
Let’s start with the good news because, frankly, it’s more fun. Ed Ingram is back, and not a moment too soon. After being sidelined for the season opener with a pesky abdominal injury, Ingram is set to reclaim his spot at right guard. He was a full participant in practice late this week, which is the football equivalent of a green light.
Why is this a big deal? The offensive line looked, let’s say, confused against the Rams, allowing three sacks and a pressure rate that had Quarterback C.J. Stroud running for his life. Getting Ingram back allows the Texans to return to their preferred starting lineup, which should bring some much-needed stability and cohesion. Think of it as putting the puzzle pieces back in the right places.
Now for the not-so-good news. Center Jake Andrews is out with an ankle injury, and Wide Receivers Christian Kirk and Braxton Berrios are both still nursing hamstring issues. Both receivers will be missing their second straight game, which is starting to feel less like a brief absence and more like a frustrating trend.
With Andrews sidelined, Jarrett Patterson will step in. He held his own last season and didn’t allow a single pressure in his limited reps last week, so there’s a silver lining. Coach DeMeco Ryans seems to have faith, saying Patterson “is going to give you everything he has.” You can’t ask for much more than that.
The receiving corps, however, is feeling the strain. Kirk was pegged to be a top target, and without him, the Texans will have to rely on a committee of Justin Watson, Jaylin Noel, and Xavier Hutchinson to pick up the slack. Berrios’s absence also means rookie Jaylin Noel will continue handling punt returns.
So, as the Texans gear up for their Monday night home opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it’s a mixed bag. They get a crucial piece of their offensive line back, but the offense will still be missing some key weapons. Welcome to the NFL, where the injury report is just as important as the game plan.
