Houston Texans' trade for wide receiver Stefon Diggs frees up ability to make money-saving move
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Texans woke everyone up with some crazy news on Wednesday. Just when nothing crazy was happening, they went and traded for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who is one of the best in the game, to pair with Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and C.J. Stroud. They have firmly forced themselves into the conversation of Super Bowl contenders, but there are more moves to be done.

Trading for a wide receiver and not giving one up means there is one more on the depth chart now. According to OurLads, the Texans have 11 wide receivers on the roster. Most teams only keep six, seven, and sometimes eight on their 53-man roster, which means the team has quite a bit of work to do in getting that number down.

There are ways they can go about it, too. We have previously mentioned that the Texans could possibly trade one of them, such as John Metchie, who other teams will be interested in. Or, they could go ahead and cut one, making the decision come time at training camp a bit easier.

The fan base has wanted Robert Woods cut for some time now, but there was never really a good reason to do that. Now, they have a good reason, as Diggs provides the veteran experience the position groups need. Not to mention, the Texans would save money if they did decide to move on from Woods.

According to Over the Cap, the Texans could save $4.9 million in cap space if they cut Woods and $6.5 million if they traded him.

Woods served his purpose on the Texans. He made some big plays for the Texans, and was a good option after Dell went down. However, they don't really need him anymore and need his cap savings. I'd expect to see the Texans do this move before the start of the season.
