How Aaron Rodgers is impacting Steelers' Ty Simpson decision

Recently, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen raised eyebrows when he said that he thought it was "50-50" that veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers would either return to the team for another season or ride off into the sunset of retirement. Subsequently, reports have indicated that Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson could be selected during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Understandably, some have suggested that Pittsburgh is a potential landing spot for Simpson. On Friday, Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor of ESPN offered an update regarding the possibility that the team could grab Simpson with overall pick No. 21.

Steelers seem confident about Aaron Rodgers decision

"Though the Steelers have done their homework on the quarterbacks," Pryor said, "including first-round hopeful Ty Simpson, it doesn't appear they'll go that way at No. 21. They continue to believe Aaron Rodgers will ultimately return for another season. Instead, they could take best-available player among wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line or any spot in the secondary."

Per Troy Montgomery of Steelers Depot, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said during Thursday's edition of the "2 Pros and a Cup of Joe" program that the Steelers are "confident that they're going to have Rodgers back" in their quarterback room sooner rather than later. Previous reports noted that the Steelers won't feel "forced" to draft a quarterback next week, which has led many to believe it's a matter of when and not if Rodgers will sign another one-year contract with the club.

As for Simpson, many think he will enter the final Saturday of April as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Steelers have "flexibility" regarding the draft?

As recently as Thursday, it was said that the Steelers could take a flier on Miami's Carson Beck or Penn State’s Drew Allar at some point after the draft's second round wraps up. If those within the organization are truly interested in making Simpson a first-round selection, they're doing a great job of hiding their intentions.

"Unlike recent years," Pryor explained, "there doesn't seem to be a consensus player -- or even position -- for the Steelers to take in the first round. The front office addressed some of the most glaring needs (wide receiver, cornerback, safety) in free agency, giving them the flexibility to play the board. The Steelers' predraft visits also don't necessarily tip their hand because many of those brought in are considered middle-round picks."
