How Are The Eagles Playing Without Their Starters?

After a week of controversy surrounding whether the Giants would rest their starters — particularly with Saquon Barkley's pursuit of the rushing title hanging in the balance — it's been the Eagles' reserves who have stolen the show at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia's backup squad, led by quarterback Tanner McKee, has built a convincing 10-0 halftime lead against New York's first-team unit, while scoreboard watching shows both potential playoff opponents — the Packers and Commanders — trailing in their respective games against the Bears and Cowboys.

McKee has displayed veteran-like poise and efficiency, completing 17 of 26 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. His biggest moment came late in the first quarter when he found rookie receiver Anias Smith for a 15-yard touchdown strike — the first NFL touchdown of Smith's young career — capping off a crisp 4-play, 51-yard drive.

A significant bright spot for the Eagles has been the return of tight end Dallas Goedert, who's seeing his first game action since being sidelined after the Ravens game on Dec. 1. Goedert has shown no signs of rust, already making an impact with four receptions for 55 yards, including a key 17-yard catch that helped set up points. His successful return to action provides a major boost for Philadelphia's upcoming playoff run.

The Eagles' backup receiving corps has also stepped up admirably, with Jalin Dotson leading the way with five catches for 63 yards. While the offense has moved the ball effectively through the air, the Eagles' defensive reserves have been equally impressive, holding the Giants' starting offense to just 84 total yards.

With the Packers struggling against Chicago and Washington falling behind Dallas, Philadelphia's wild-card matchup next weekend at Lincoln Financial Field is starting to come into focus. The second half will provide further opportunity for the Eagles' depth players to continue their strong showing, as they've already proven they can compete effectively against starting-caliber opposition.
