How Can the Eagles Tie an NFL Record on Sunday?

The Philadelphia Eagles are on the verge of a piece of NFL history as they prepare to host the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game. With a win on Sunday, the Eagles would become the second team ever to win three home playoff games in a single postseason.

The only other time this has happened was in 1982, when the Washington Redskins won three home games in an expanded 16-team postseason.

Philadelphia is in this position because of the NFL's expanded playoff format and its stellar home-field dominance. This year, the team has already secured two postseason victories at Lincoln Financial Field, extending its home winning streak to nine games.

The expanded playoff structure, introduced in 2020, has made this scenario possible. Previously, the No. 2 seed received a first-round bye, which meant they would host a maximum of two playoff games. Under the new 14-team format, the No. 2 seed now plays in the wild-card round, offering an additional home game opportunity if the top-seeded team is upset – as was the case when the Detroit Lions fell to Washington in the divisional round.

The Eagles join a short list of teams to host three playoff games in a single postseason. The 2021 Kansas City Chiefs achieved the same feat but failed to win the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Similarly, the 2021 Los Angeles Rams played three postseason games, including the Super Bowl, at SoFi Stadium, but their championship win is not counted as an official home playoff victory.

Lincoln Financial Field will be just the fifth stadium to host three postseason games in one season. The others are RFK Stadium, Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium, the Rams’ SoFi Stadium and Giants Stadium, which hosted three games during the New York Giants' Super Bowl-winning 1986 season (two Giants games and one Jets game). Notably, that year also featured the last NFC Championship Game clash between two NFC East rivals, when the Giants defeated Washington.

The Eagles' home-field advantage has been a critical factor in their playoff success, with wins in their last six postseason games at the Linc. Leaguewide, home teams have posted a 26-8 record in postseason games since 2022. However, the Commanders have already defied the odds as a road underdog this postseason, winning two playoff games away from home, including their shocking upset of the Lions.

For Philadelphia fans, this Sunday’s game represents more than a shot at another Super Bowl – it’s an opportunity to solidify their team’s legacy in the NFL record books.
